Rick Poynor – debate Items Live
The leading English design critic Rick Poynor will take part in a debate with Dutch graphic designers on the gap between independent small studios and large commercial agencies in the Netherlands.

The debate on the cultural role of studios and agencies in Dutch graphic design is a joint production of Items magazine and Premsela, Dutch Platform for Design and Fashion.

In an essay in Dutch Design Jaarboek 2010, the influential UK design critic Rick Poynor argues that large agencies like Thonik, Lava and Designpolitie no longer belong to the Netherlands’ design vanguard, as agencies like Studio Dumbar and Total Design did in the 1980s. Today, only small studios, such as Experimental Jetset and Metahaven, are truly innovative, according to Poynor. Tirso Francés of Dietwee, one of the larger agencies, will challenge Poynor to refine his position.
?Rick Poynor will engage in the Items Live debate with critics and supporters including Tirso Francés (Dietwee), Antoine Achten (Cultuur & Ondernemen; juror, Dutch Design Awards) and Luna Maurer (designer, Conditional Design). Moderator: Max Bruinsma, editor of Items.
