Yes, But Is It Edible?, Will Holder

Yes, But Is It Edible?

In this exhibition, Will Holder presents the work of contemporary American composer Robert Ashley (1930), best known for his operas and other theatrical works (many of which incorporate electronics and extended techniques).
During a 25-year working reationship with a “band” of speakers, Ashley has developed a unique for of opera which investigates the musicality of American speech.

Since 2004, Will Holder has been working with Alex Waterman on “Yes, But Is It Edible?”, a scored biography of the composer, to be colectively read aloud. Holder and Waterman have developed a form of typographycal notation in order to reproduce (semi-autobiographical) operas that were developed through oral instruction and negotiation? During this period of exhibition, Holder will be residing in Brussels to complete this publication.
On show at Objectif are earlier works of Robert Ashley which – though not included in the biography – have informed the process of its making.
