The Escola Aberta will be a temporary design school in Rio de Janeiro, from the 6th till the 11th of August 2012.
Directed at students, young professionals and artists, the Escola Aberta aims to ignite a discussion on ways of practising and teaching design. Its main intention is to encourage the exchange of ideas between the Netherlands and Brazil, raising questions and opening a contemplative arena rather than offering definite solutions.
Teachers and students of graphic design from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie have developed a program of activities for the duration of one week. Lectures, workshops, performances and discussions will challenge the conventions of design, both in theory and in practice.
The event will bring 40 students and teachers from the Netherlands to Brazil.
The Gerrit Rietveld Academie is a school of arts and design based in Amsterdam, whose international character fosters a rich exchange of knowledge, skills and customs. The graphic design department aims to stimulate critical thinking, an authorial position of the designer and a close relationship between autonomous and applied work. Enjoying a non-hierarchical structure, teachers and students engage in an intensified exchange of opinions and ideas.
The school seeks critical and open minds: participants will be challenged to act as teachers, students, masters, apprentices, designers and artists.
Application will be open until the 1st of July 2012.
