Avec Marin Dacos, Stéphanie Vilayphiou et Alexandre Leray (Issue Magazine), Yannick James, Florian Cramer, etc . . .

BECOMING MINORITY

February 23rd, 2010

Becoming Minority The Conference

Studium Generale is an extensive trans-disciplinary theory program that addresses students and teachers of all departments of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
From March 8 till March 12 2010 Studium Generale presents a five day conference under the overarching title Becoming Minority.
Visitors from outside the academy are most welcome to attend the conference as well (interested outsiders can send a mail to subscribeSG@rietveldacademie.nl mentioning your name and program(s) of your choice. You can subscribe till March 1st )

During a remarkable seminar at the Rietveld Academie in April 1997, a dedicated group of students and teachers reflected on the immense resonance that French philosopher Gilles Deleuze’s body of thought had in even the remotest corners of the various art, film, and music scenes of the nineties. They contemplated enchanting concepts such as the ‘rhizome’, the ‘body without organs’, ‘lines of flight’, ‘becoming woman’, and last but not least the ‘becoming minor or minority’. It was unclear at that time whether this inspired congregation of terms marked the end or the beginning of an era.
Today, after 9/11 and in the middle of the ongoing ‘war on terror’, Deleuze appears to have lost quite a bit of his magic. New icons of ‘theory’ have emerged and some thinkers even declared that one of the most important Deleuzian concepts, that of ‘becoming minority’, was the last creative rebound of a decadent Eurocentric culture. (. . .)
Studium Generale invited ten curators and artist-curators, from in and from outside the Rietveld Academie and proposed the Deleuzian concept of BECOMING MINORITY to them as an umbrella for a wide range of critical or affirmative positions.
In close collaboration with research groups consisting of Rietveld students in their second year of course, the curators developed ten very specific, sometimes very personal and always exciting, platforms of one day, from 10 am to 10 pm.
The conference BECOMING MINORITY will offer you mental and real space, where you can share your thoughts and doubts with other students, teachers and visitors from outside the academy, rethink your practice and enjoy and engage with what the wealth of invited makers and thinkers have to say, show, screen or perform about and for the world, about and through art, on and in becoming and (be)longing.

“The artist and collector Andreas Züst (1947–2000) was not only a legendary figure in the Swiss and European art field but also a dedicated book lover. MORI

February 19th, 2010

MORI, a new publication, is one in a series published by Viewer’s Digest, a sequence of visual broadsheets exploring the status of the image through specific themes. Viewer’s Digest is a project originated by Erol Gemma & Nazareno Crea.

Through its juxtaposition of images, manipulation of space and reference to different styles and genres, the project interrogates the representations that surround us. Viewer’s Digest is a closed series of five publications (LVX, MORI, QVEO, DOCTA and NOX) that analyses and interprets images through and in relation to their editorial articulation.

MORI explores ideas of identity, vanity and narcissism as represented in the media, including via television, internet and social networking sites.

Launch of MORI
Thursday 25 February 2010, 6.30 – 8.30pm
Artwords Broadway Market, 20-22 Broadway Market, London E8 4QJ

RING MY BELL

Vernissage 19 h – 22 h

Manuel Raeder – Open line into times

February 19th, 2010

Open line into times
Tic-tac-tic-tac
Manuel Raeder

The relationship between open lines (directions)
and circles (enclosures)
The relationship between time and space
The relationship between movement and position
The relationship between a ray of light and a wall
The relationship between chairs and legs
Tic-tac-tic-tac-tic-tac-tic-tac-tic-tac-tic
Ulises Carrion, “Clockwork”, Amsterdam, 1987

For Manuel Raeder, time is not linear but can be seen as a flexible tangle. When we live things happen to us, but when we report them we make them happen. Objects and archives transform our actions. At Elgarafi he will be presenting a series of new furniture works that can be used as an archive or sitting devices. Single pages will be flying into the space, forming a limited publication.

February 27th – March 28th 2010
Opening 27th February 5pm-8pm
ELGARAFI, West-Berlin
