Design projections

Publish and Be Damned
Surveying a wide range of independent local, national and international publishers of magazines, fanzines, journals, diaries and periodicals, Publish and Be Damned celebrates publishing as a creative and critical space for presenting artists’ work. As with previous years, the fair celebrates experimental approaches to making and distributing the work of artists, writers and musicians outside of the commercial mainstream.
Publish and Be Damned is taking place in parallel with the London Art Book Fair, 25 Fri – 27 Sun at the Whitechapel.

Werktage
We, the students of the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle, Germany, are inviting other students to discuss with them and guests about the current situation and future development of the academic training in our disciplines. The agenda of the werktage comprises workshops, lectures and an Open Space meeting. It will take place from the 21st until the 25th of October 2009.
Recently universities in Germany changed massively. The Bologna Process, the debate about the introduction of tuition fees and the global economic crisis are just a few of the things that have a big impact on the future of our education.
How are we going to deal with that? How does it influence our present situation? How do we want to study in the future? We have to talk about projects that are self initiated, interdisciplinary, sustainable and have a big social interest. So all in all werktage is supposed to be more then a meeting – an event which connects people and their ideas in order to create something new.
Werktage is organized by Anja Kaiser and Christoph Knoth

The works displayed on mybiennialisbetterthanyours.com are not subversive because they are trying to deconstruct established systems of dot.capitalism. They are subversive because they are referring to these systems through the use of amateur “original” content production standards set up by meta-producers of online containers, which are radical in their mass popularity and ease of use…
Stadtstaat. A Scenario for Merging Cities — Episode 2
Stadtstaat. A Scenario for Merging Cities is a project by Metahaven in two episodes, co-produced and presented by Casco and Ku?nstlerhaus Stuttgart. Following episode 1 on view until 12 September at Ku?nstlerhaus Stuttgart, the opening of episode 2 takes place on 25 September at Casco where the story of ‘Stadtstaat’ evolves.
Stadtstaat. A Scenario for Merging Cities projects a mise-en-scene of an urban experiment not city twinning, but city merging. Going beyond the conjectural scenarios of place-branding that have inflected their recent work, Metahaven invents models for a regional ‘city-state.’ With a programmatic reflection on the homogeneity that might befall to European ‘unification,’ we are invited to imagine a policy decision by two mid-level Northern European cities that bid to weather the economic downturn and enhance their networking capacities by becoming one – Utrecht and Stuttgart (…)
Stadtstaat. A Scenario for Merging Cities generates forms that render the role of design in a managed and technocratic European reality more tangible and debatable (…)
On the last day of ‘Stadtstaat. A Scenario for Merging Cities’, a public forum with international thinkers and practitioners will be organized in order to discuss the issue of urban governance and politics in the light of network power and the thrust of participation.
